theartmarket is an independent artist focussed contemporary art space in the heart of Leeds City Centre.

Set-up in December 2006 by graduate artists Zoe Sawyer and Anna Tonks theartmarkets studio/ shop/ gallery hybrid provided an antithesis to the standard gallery model, a showcase for contemporary art in Leeds utilising a vacant market unit in the heart of Leeds commercial centre. With a DIY ethic, theartmarket has endeavoured to raise the visibility of visual arts in Leeds, promote and attract critical attention to the resident creative scene and draw artistic activity to Leeds.

 


Currently directed and curated by co-founder Zoe Sawyer theartmarket operates through collaboration with creative associates and its extended artist and volunteer network. Co-curating the programme with different artists and curators on a 'project by project' basis. This flexible set-up allows accessibility to the space, giving new artists and curators opportunity to gain experience and showcase their talents. The infrastructure allows theartmarket to continually grow, develop and re-interpret itself within the ever-changing nature of the contemporary art environment.
